Every potion, brewed right

What to put in the brewing stand, in what order, and exactly how long each potion lasts, at all three tiers, base, Level II, and extended.

23Potions
18With a duration table
2Throwable forms

Every ingredient and duration comes from a hand-checked pass against the game's own brewing mechanics, cross-referenced across two sources rather than assumed. Only the write-up around them is ours.

How the brewing stand works

  1. Place a Brewing Stand and add Blaze Powder as fuel.
  2. Put up to three Water Bottles in the bottom slots. Adding Nether Wart above them brews Awkward Potion, the base almost every other potion starts from.
  3. Add an effect ingredient to an Awkward Potion for the effect you want. Redstone extends the result's duration, and Glowstone Dust brews a stronger, shorter Level II version instead.
  4. Add Gunpowder to make a thrown Splash Potion, or Dragon's Breath to a Splash Potion to make a Lingering Potion that leaves a cloud behind.

Base potions

Every Water Bottle becomes one of these four before it can become anything else. Three are dead ends; Awkward Potion is the one that feeds nearly every effect potion below.

Effect potions (18)

Brewed from Awkward Potion plus an ingredient, except Weakness (straight from a Water Bottle) and Invisibility/Harming/Slowness (brewed by corrupting another potion with Fermented Spider Eye).

Two special cases

  • Potion of the Turtle Master grants two effects at once instead of one, so it doesn't fit the table above. Base gives Slowness IV and Resistance III for 20 seconds; Level II gives Slowness VI and Resistance IV for 20 seconds; extended gives Slowness IV and Resistance III for 40 seconds.
  • Potion of Luck has no Survival brewing recipe at all. It's creative/command only, listed here for completeness.

Splash & Lingering potions

Adding Gunpowder to any drinkable potion turns it into a Splash Potion, which shatters on impact to affect anyone caught in the radius. The duration for whoever it hits is the same as drinking the potion directly.

Adding Dragon’s Breath to a Splash Potion turns it into a Lingering Potion, which leaves behind a lasting cloud instead of an instant splash. The cloud only carries the effect for a quarter of the splash potion’s own duration.
