Bee / Honey Farm

Honey bottles, honeycomb, food, candles, beehives, honey blocks

easy

Three things need to line up for a hive to actually produce honey: a hive or nest, flowers nearby, and time. A bee that successfully pollinates a flower flies back carrying pollen, and enough of those trips fills the hive's internal honey level, visible as the texture changing to show honey dripping. Harvest with a bottle for honey, or shears for honeycomb.

There's a real downside if you skip one step. Harvesting from a hive with a bottle, or with shears at the wrong moment, without smoke nearby has a chance to anger every bee inside at once, and they'll swarm and sting you. A lit campfire under the hive suppresses that anger response completely, which is why nearly every bee farm design has one sitting right underneath at all times.

The manual version is just a few relocated hives near an open flower field, each with a campfire below, visited now and then with glass bottles once they look full. No redstone, genuinely low effort for a steady supply.

More automated setups use a dispenser loaded with bottles or shears, triggered on a timer, so a full hive gets harvested without you needing to be there. Since the campfire already handles the anger problem, the only thing left to figure out is timing the trigger to roughly match how often a hive actually fills, which depends on how many flowers and bees you've got nearby.

Honeycomb has a use worth knowing about: it's the only way to make waxed copper, which permanently stops the block's natural color-shift from oxidation. Honey itself is a decent food item too, edible straight off the farm with no cooking needed.

We haven't filmed our own walkthrough for this one yet. Until we do, here's a live search for current video tutorials.

Materials needed

  • 1 beehive or bee nest
  • 2+ bees (to breed)
  • a few flowers nearby (pollination)
  • 1 campfire (collect without angering bees)
  • glass bottles or 1 shears
  • ~16 building blocks (housing)

Near flower fields for pollination efficiency.
